Transverse handrail for use on stairs. Comprises a track fixed to the wall on the side of the stairs and a dynamic handrail which moves along track, locking when weight is applied to provide static support. The StairSteady is like a walking frame for the stairs it can help a wide range of people who have difficulties using their stairs independently. It has a fixed rail and moving lockable handle that locks in place as soon as pressure is applied to it allowing the user to stop and rest securely whenever they need to. When not in use, the handle goes from the square section to a round parking section at either the top or bottom of the stairs and so the handle folds away parallel with the wall and is unobtrusive. This allows the stairs to be used by both those with unlimited and limited mobility in the household.
