Many people face significant barriers when trying to find work or get back into the workforce. That's where WHP Pioneer by Shaw Trust comes in. This free service is designed to help you overcome these barriers and secure meaningful employment. 

What is the WHP Pioneer? 


The WHP (Work and Health Programme) Pioneer is part of the Work and Health Programme and is the latest phase of Universal Support.  

It’s aimed at supporting individuals facing challenges in finding work. Whether due to a lack of recent work experience, health issues, or other personal obstacles, WHP Pioneer offers tailored support to help you into a job that suits you. 

Who is eligible? 


To be eligible for this free service you must not currently be employed or in training and face one or more of the following barriers: 


  • Have a disability or health condition recognised under the Equality Act 2010 
  • Ex-offender or offender 
  • Carer or ex-carer 
  • Former member of HM Armed Forces 
  • Member of the HM Armed Forces reserves 
  • Partner of current or former Armed Forces personnel 
  • People facing challenges such as homelessness or substance misuse 
  • Victim of domestic violence 
  • Refugee or Afghan resettler 
  • Ukranian refuge 
  • Young person identified as being involved or at risk of being involved in gangs or serious violence

What does the service include? 


  1. Personalised support: You'll work with a dedicated advisor who will help you identify your strengths, overcome challenges, and develop a plan to achieve your employment goals. 
  2. Job search and support: Finding a job can be daunting, but you don't have to do it alone. WHP Pioneer offers job search assistance, including helping you with writing CVs, preparing for interviews, and finding job vacancies that match your skills and interests. 
  3. Skills development: Sometimes, the key to securing a job is gaining new skills or updating existing ones. You’ll get access to training opportunities that can enhance your employability, whether through workshops, online courses, or vocational training. 
  4. Work experience opportunities: Gaining recent work experience can be crucial. Helping you find work placements or volunteering opportunities that provide valuable experience and boost your confidence. 
  5. In-work support: The support doesn't stop once you find a job. WHP Pioneer continues to provide assistance to ensure you succeed in your new role. This might include ongoing advice, help with workplace adjustments, or support with any challenges you face once in work.
