We know that for those with a disability going away can be anxiety inducing, even when it’s for a holiday. Travel is just one part of the anxiety. The added equipment, mobility aids, medication and the like make packing more difficult and add stress to one’s holiday preparation. Sometimes these items can be bulky and take a lot of space. This week we bring to you some brilliant pieces of equipment to make holidays less stressful, along with some tips to think about when packing.

  • Consider your accessibility needs and what you want out of your trip – Do you, or the group you are going away with, enjoy outdoor activities such as following walking trails or going to the beach? Make sure if you use a mobility aid, or wheelchair, that it is built suitably to enable you to take part in all the activities that everyone else in the group wishes to do. There are some brilliant all terrain wheelchairs that you might want to consider purchasing or renting, such as Mountain Trikegiving you the opportunity to do as much or as little as you want. Or products such as WheelEEZ allow you to build your own beach wheelchair.
  • Ask yourself what you would like to take from your daily life to make things as comfortable as possible – this could be anything from adaptive cutlery, or a neck support pillow, or a mobility aid. These may seem like small items, but they can make a world of difference to your comfort and functionality.
  • Consider renting equipment – if you don’t currently have a mobility aid or wheelchair at home, but think the use of one might be helpful whilst away, perhaps consider hiring or renting one. There are many companies which can help with this and finding the right product for your trip meaning you can benefit from using one and not have to undertake the expenditure of purchasing one.

There are some brilliant products out there which are designed to make travelling with a disability easier. We have included four very different, but equally as helpful products, with links to their company websites and information how to purchase.

The Hydrant

We all know we need to drink a lot to avoid the risk of dehydration. But what if you are unable to drink without help? Many thousands of vulnerable people are simply unable to reach, to lift, or to hold drinks and so need help to stay hydrated – but the help is not always available when needed. The Hydrant drinking system is designed to make independent drinking easy for vulnerable people and is invaluable in helping to prevent the dehydration that often leads to very serious health problems and hospitalisation. Hang it, hook it, clip it almost anywhere for easy access to fluids. Please click here to be directed to Hydrate for Health’s website, and click here to be directed to purchase the Hydrant.
