This section includes battery powered wheelchairs which means they do not need to be pushed manually by the user or a carer. They may have a mid, front, rear or four-wheel drive, and may be used indoors and/or outdoors. Some may have features designed to increase comfort and support, for example a reclining back, tilt-in-space function or swivel seat.
Powered wheelchairs are available in two speed types:
Stand up wheelchairs have a footrest, seat and backrest that flatten out simultaneously, stabilising the user to enable them to be lifted into a near-vertical standing position. They may have a supporting harness and pads around the trunk and knees, and some may have an elevating seat to enable the user to be seated at a height appropriate to their surroundings. Some models can be driven at a reduced speed with the seat fully elevated.
Powered sports wheelchairs, intended primarily for sports use, are also included.
Children's powered wheelchairs tend to be smaller in size and may have a smaller turning circle to enable use in the school or pre-school setting. They may also have a kerb climbing function. Some children's powered wheelchairs can be modified in back height and seat width, depth and height to allow for a child's growth.
