This section includes ball pools which are comprised of a large number of brightly coloured hollow plastic balls placed in a soft play 'pool', of any shape or size. They provide children with support and deep pressure stimulation and may enable them to move more freely. The deep pressure sensation can also have a calming effect on very active children.
The pools are made of PVC-covered foam walls or blocks which are generally held together with Velcro straps and may have wooden reinforcements. They may be low-walled like paddling pools, or tent type with windows and an entrance door.
Balls are available in various diameters. Smaller sized balls will provide a greater degree of support for a child with reduced muscle tone. Larger balls are more suitable for larger pools and more active children.
Ball pools can be part of a soft play area or multisensory environment.
