Cups, mugs and glasses

Plastic cups with lids may help reduce the risk of spillage and keep drinks warm. Lids with small or large spouts, liquid flow control, and small holes to drink through are available. Some cups may have integral or detachable handles. Cups with two handles may be easier to control, those with moulded handles may be easier and more comfortable to grip.

China and weighted cups and mugs may help if a person has a tremor or has difficultly controlling their movements. They may also provide a more stable base.

Insulated cups and mugs help maintain the temperature of the drink and may also be useful for a person with reduced sensation in their hands as the outer surface stays cool.

Some cups and mugs have an alternative style grip, for example finger grooves, angled rims and thumb rests, which may make them easier to use.

Spill-resistant cups and mugs have features such as lids or a spill resistant inserts, which may help prevent spillage.

Cups and mugs that have an angled or cut-out rim, a lid that regulates the flow of fluid, or an integral straw through the lid may assist a person who has difficulty swallowing and drinking. 

Cups and mugs that are brightly coloured or have colour contrast may help a person who is experiencing memory loss.
