This section includes wheelchairs that are propelled manually, either by the wheelchair user or a carer.
Manually propelled wheelchairs may have a folding frame, swing-away footrests, fixed or detachable armrests, and a mid-level or high backrest. Postural supports may also be available. Some attendant propelled wheelchairs are intended for occasional short journeys indoors and/or outdoors. They will not offer postural support to the user.
Some manual wheelchairs have specialist features designed to increase comfort and support, for example, those with a reclining back and/or tilt-in-space function.
Also included are wheelchairs designed to assist with propulsion and positioning. Dual axle wheelchairs can be converted from a user-propelled to an attendant propelled wheeled model if both sets of rear wheels are available. Some wheelchairs are designed with their wheels set back to assist with balance for a user with a limb amputation, others may enable one-sided propulsion.
Stand up wheelchairs have a footrest, seat and backrest that flatten out simultaneously, stabilising the user to enable them to be lifted into a near-vertical standing position.
Wheelchairs with non-magnetic frame are stainless steel with magnetic or radiation shielding for use in X-Ray or MRI environments.
Some children's wheelchairs can be modified to allow for a child's growth.
Mobile adjustable wheelchair chassis which can interface with a wide range of seating systems are also included. They may offer features such as adjustable seat height, tilt-in-space and choice of wheel type.
